Nel IV millennio a.C. i sumeri crearono le prime società urbane basate sulla stratificazione sociale e sulla specializzazione del lavoro. La scrittura fu una conseguenza dell’urbanizzazione. L’improvvisa evoluzione urbana determinò lo sviluppo di moltissime attività, che necessitavano di uno strumento di controllo indiretto per essere sfruttate su tutto il territorio. Col passare del tempo il sistema fu migliorato e divenne possibile riportare ogni genere d’informazione. Le tavolette d’argilla contengono i principi teologici di questa cultura e rivelando la grande profondità poetica. La mitologia sumera riflette la concezione che i sumeri avevano del mondo e della condizione umana. Queste concezioni influenzato lo sviluppo di molte importanti religioni nel corso della storia del Vicino Oriente.
